Marriage is part of a heteronormative world project, where civil and religious union socially legitimizes the relationship lived by a couple. But in our film's territory, a distant planet dominated by a queer dictatorship, marriage means a kind of deviation, an act to be condemned by the conservative local population — especially if the marriage in question is a heterosexual celebration. Based on a scene from John Waters' film "Female Trouble," in which the aunt pleads with her nephew to engage in a homosexual relationship, we developed this narrative to highlight the fragility of gender and sexuality definitions and limits when imagining a non-binary world. After all, why would love need any kind of validation? Jae and Cristo [our characters] are a real non-binary couple, gender deviants, performing the fluidity of their contours and transiting through the different possible binary social readings that correspond to hegemonic normative expectations. By playing the roles of bride/groom and bride/groom, they make us question the many prejudices that constrain love, making us dream of a world where inversions are possible and limitations are a foolish part of our imagination.
This collaborative project manifests in multiple forms: a website that functions as a collage, with behind-the-scenes excerpts, declarations of love, photographs and video clips; and a trailer for a non-existent film, leaving its narrative open and allowing it to circulate infinitely, where its possibilities remain a dream — always to be dreamed.
